A note

Bringing out the best version of my patients’ smiles is what makes this work my passion. As in any aesthetic surgery, beautiful and natural results are built in the nuances of diagnosis and planning, and in technique honed over many operations. In jaw surgery, this is especially true. If you or a loved one is looking for a surgeon to bring out a more balanced, healthier you, it would be my privilege to guide that journey.

Approach

How Dr. Subtelny Practices

Benjamin Subtelny, DDS, is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon whose practice centers on the jaws, the face, and the airway. He treats adolescents and adults with jaw deformity, obstructive sleep apnea, TMJ disease, and nerve injury after dental or facial surgery. He also places custom facial implants and removes cysts, tumors, and lesions of the face, jaws, and salivary glands.

His planning follows one principle: form follows function. The movements that correct a bite or open an airway also shape the profile, the chin, and the jawline. He designs the function and the appearance together, in a three-dimensional plan measured to the millimeter.

Corrective jaw surgery changes how a person chews, breathes, and looks. Dr. Subtelny gives those decisions unhurried time before surgery and close attention after it. He sees every patient himself and is the surgeon for every operation he plans.

Training

Education and Surgical Training

Dr. Subtelny completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey. He chose St. Joseph's because its high volume of facial trauma is the proving ground for a confident, effective facial surgeon.

He then completed subspecialty fellowship training in complex orthognathic, TMJ, and craniomaxillofacial surgery through Hackensack University Medical Center and the wider Hackensack Meridian Health network. During fellowship, he performed hundreds of operations in corrective jaw surgery, TMJ surgery, facial trauma, and reconstruction, drawn from across the network.

For Dr. Subtelny, that volume of cases in a short time developed the artistic eye that aesthetic and functional results demand. Treating cases across the full range of facial deformity taught him to read each face and to choose the combination of movements that gives the best result for the face, jawline, smile, and bite, while keeping the airway open for easy breathing. The operation itself became second nature, while the artistry in planning that drives beautiful, predictable results continues to make the work invigorating.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and holds surgical and admitting privileges at five major hospitals across Northern and Central New Jersey. He is licensed to practice and holds general anesthesia permits in New York and New Jersey.

Family Influences

Function and Appearance

Dr. Subtelny is married to a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and the two often operate together. Working across their two specialties has shaped how he judges a result. A jaw operation has to leave a face that looks balanced and natural and an airway that stays open, not only jaws positioned so the teeth fit together. He plans every case to meet all of these standards.

Planning With the Orthodontist

His interest in the jaws began in high school, when his grandfather, an orthodontist, taught him to trace cephalometric X-rays on a lightbox, usually with a Buffalo Bills game on in the background. These are the profile X-rays orthodontists and surgeons use to measure the face and its growth, and tracing them was his first lesson in how the teeth and the jaws are meant to form.

Early lessons from the specialty that developed cephalometric analysis still guide his work. He welcomes collaboration with each patient's orthodontist, and together they agree on goals and how best to reach them before treatment begins. Orthodontists are always invited to join Dr. Subtelny's virtual surgical planning sessions.

Outside the OR

Outside the operating room, Dr. Subtelny plays men's league ice hockey when the games aren't too late at night, and spends as much of his free time as he can with his wife, Laura, and their Shih Tzu–Pomeranian, Sam. He also loves a weekend in his hometown in upstate New York, building old racecars with his dad and his brother and doing yard work for his mom.
